house on millen rd

at the end of a gravel driveway
where the wisteria grew
was a yellow house
with fruit trees in the yard,
cats on the porch,
dog at the door;
where we dug in the clay
red and hard.
snails under leaves
raspberry canes above head,
kittens, aprons, apple tree,
baking cookies and
donuts on a
saturday. sunday
dinner at the table with the family;
lilacs, daffodils, rhubarb pie,
this was a place that
I loved well.

The house on millen rd was my grandmother's house where I spent many weekends as a child. She had a great backyard for adventures and never tired of the many projects my sister and I would come up with... we did a lot of baking in that kitchen, quilting, sewing, talked about cats and plants.
